Danish Pig Production: A Shift from Local Slaughter to Export 🚛 🐖 Yesterday’s Nordic Insights article highlighted the significant decline in pig production across the Nordics, particularly in Denmark. However, what wasn’t explicitly clear is how this decline in local slaughtering reflects a broader shift in Danish pig production. While Denmark remains the largest pig producer in the region, a growing share of pigs is no longer slaughtered domestically. Instead, they are exported live to countries like Germany and Poland for further rearing or slaughter. This shift has major implications for local jobs, animal welfare, and the climate, as transporting live animals over long distances adds stress for the animals and increases CO2 emissions. This trend represents a structural transformation in the industry, moving away from complete local processing to a production model that prioritizes exports.
